What to Look For

A fresh artichoke will have rich, green or purple leaves, which are tightly closed. It will also feel heavy, due to moisture retention. Leaves should be crisp, however, small artichokes will have tender leaves.

Storage Tips

As soon as possible, you should sprinkle artichokes with water to prevent them from drying out, and refrigerate them in a plastic bag. It is best to eat artichokes within a day or two.

Artichokes contain high levels of vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and, fiber.

  • Artichokes are thought to originate in the Mediterranean. The earliest record of them being used dates from around 300BC in Italy.
  • The 'Globe' artichoke (the type most commonly found in supermarkets) is a member of the thistle family!
